Chapter Six
âHard week?â he asked when Thelma left.
âNo. How about you?â Abby tried to smother her guilty feelings. Between the gardening book and YouTube, she had enough information to feel confident in the minimal work she was doing. At least she didnât think she was ruining any plants. The yard was more than she could handle as anyone would see if they looked closely. But she only needed a couple of more days.
She served the salads Thelma had made--a German potato salad and a tasty tuna salad. She sipped her tea and then began to eat, conscious of Dev sitting only a few feet from her. She wanted to look at him, but was too afraid of what her eyes might reveal.
âMy week wasnât hard as much as hectic and long. Iâll be glad when Dadâs back at the helm. Between his vice president, secretary and me weâre able to keep going. But heâs really missed,â Dev said as he began to eat.
âIs he well enough to return right away?â
âNot sure. But heâll be able to come in for a few hours every day I hope.â
âIâd think youâd love the chance to run the company,â she said. She suspected heâd be good at it.
âIâm not running it. As I said there are three of us working together. Itâs challenging and exciting. And Dad plans for me to take over when he retires. But thatâs years away. Heâs only in his fifties. I have a lot to learn before Iâm ready to take complete charge.â
âSo youâre really doing two jobs.â
He nodded.
âWhatâs involved in running an oil company?â Maybe she could get him talking, and avoid any awkward questions.
âNo you donât. Iâve noticed every time weâre together, you ask questions. Tonight itâs your turn to give me some answers.â
Abby went still. âWhat answers?â
She met his gaze, hoping she hid the trepidation his words brought.
âStart with telling me how you ended up specializing in gardening. Or how does the climate and the soil here differ from what you were used to dealing with in Louisiana and New York. Or, how you feel about becoming an aunt.â
Smiling spontaneously at the last, she said, âI love the thought of becoming an aunt again. You know that Caroline was pregnant a long time ago and miscarried. This is her second attempt and weâre all tiptoeing around her to make sure nothing gets her upset. Not that stress was identified as the cause last time, but weâre taking no chances.â
âBecoming an aunt again? Youâre already an aunt?â
âBy marriage. My sister Michelle married a man who has a four-year-old daughter. We hit it off instantly. Sheâs adorable.â
âYou like kids?â
âIâm not around any on a regular basis. But Pennyâs precious. And I expect to be asked to baby-sit a lot when Carolineâs baby arrives.â
âThatâs why you moved here, right? To be near your sister.â
Abby held her breath. That had been the cover story. Slowly she nodded. âI want to be near Caroline and watch her baby grow, to be a part of his or her life from the beginning.
