Chapter Six

“Hard week?” he asked when Thelma left.

“No. How about you?” Abby tried to smother her guilty feelings. Between the gardening book and YouTube, she had enough information to feel confident in the minimal work she was doing. At least she didn’t think she was ruining any plants. The yard was more than she could handle as anyone would see if they looked closely. But she only needed a couple of more days.

She served the salads Thelma had made--a German potato salad and a tasty tuna salad. She sipped her tea and then began to eat, conscious of Dev sitting only a few feet from her. She wanted to look at him, but was too afraid of what her eyes might reveal.

“My week wasn’t hard as much as hectic and long. I’ll be glad when Dad’s back at the helm. Between his vice president, secretary and me we’re able to keep going. But he’s really missed,” Dev said as he began to eat.

“Is he well enough to return right away?”

“Not sure. But he’ll be able to come in for a few hours every day I hope.”

“I’d think you’d love the chance to run the company,” she said. She suspected he’d be good at it.

“I’m not running it. As I said there are three of us working together. It’s challenging and exciting. And Dad plans for me to take over when he retires. But that’s years away. He’s only in his fifties. I have a lot to learn before I’m ready to take complete charge.”

“So you’re really doing two jobs.”

He nodded.

“What’s involved in running an oil company?” Maybe she could get him talking, and avoid any awkward questions.

“No you don’t. I’ve noticed every time we’re together, you ask questions. Tonight it’s your turn to give me some answers.”

Abby went still. “What answers?”

She met his gaze, hoping she hid the trepidation his words brought.

“Start with telling me how you ended up specializing in gardening. Or how does the climate and the soil here differ from what you were used to dealing with in Louisiana and New York. Or, how you feel about becoming an aunt.”

Smiling spontaneously at the last, she said, “I love the thought of becoming an aunt again. You know that Caroline was pregnant a long time ago and miscarried. This is her second attempt and we’re all tiptoeing around her to make sure nothing gets her upset. Not that stress was identified as the cause last time, but we’re taking no chances.”

“Becoming an aunt again? You’re already an aunt?”

“By marriage. My sister Michelle married a man who has a four-year-old daughter. We hit it off instantly. She’s adorable.”

“You like kids?”

“I’m not around any on a regular basis. But Penny’s precious. And I expect to be asked to baby-sit a lot when Caroline’s baby arrives.”

“That’s why you moved here, right? To be near your sister.”

Abby held her breath. That had been the cover story. Slowly she nodded. “I want to be near Caroline and watch her baby grow, to be a part of his or her life from the beginning.
